Some would say that smoking weed from a glass pipe or bong supplies one of the cleanest smoking experiences ever. The terpenes are untainted by paper, so you can enjoy a purer smoke. However, if you prefer to smoke weed from a glass pipe or piece, one thing that is not clean at all is the residue the sticky flower leaves behind after a smoke sesh.

To keep your future bong or pipe experiences clean and pristine, cleaning up regularly is important. But learning how to clean a bong or a pipe can sound a little intimidating. We’ve pulled together this guide on the best way to clean a bong or glass smoking piece below to help you out.

When Should a Glass Weed Pipe Be Cleaned?

Ideally, it is best to clean your glass pieces after each use because this will make the process a lot simpler to navigate. However, if you are a regular smoker, try to aim to clean your pieces at least once a week at minimum.

How to Clean a Bong

What You’ll Need

  • 91-99% isopropyl alcohol
  • Coarse rock salt or rice
  • Pipe cleaners

1. Ditch the Water

Empty all the dirty water from your bong before you get started cleaning and take the time to dry it out as best you can with a towel. Any remaining water will dilute the alcohol later, which will make it less effective at breaking down the resin clinging to the glass.

2. Fully Disassemble the Bong

Disassemble the bong completely. Remove the mouthpiece, take out the bubbler, and remove the stem and bowl. Some bongs have other removable parts; just be sure the bong is fully broken down so you can clean each piece.

3. Add Alcohol

Pour alcohol into the bong, the more, the better. For the smaller pieces, place them in a small bowl filled with alcohol for a long soak. After adding alcohol, allow the solution to soak for 30 minutes to an hour. If the bong is especially dirty, allow it to soak even longer. Even overnight won’t hurt.

4. Add Salt and Shake

A good coarse rock salt or Epsom salt makes a good abrasive agent for cleaning the interior of a bong. Drop in a few hefty tablespoons while the bong is still filled with alcohol. Shake the bong briskly to move the salt around the interior to knock away the residue on the glass. When you’re satisfied with the results, discard the alcohol and salt solution.

5. Scrub

Use a small scrub brush or toothbrush to clean up any remaining residue on the glass. The best way to clean pipe parts from the mouthpiece, stem, or bubbler is by using a clean pipe cleaner to really get in there and slough away the resinous buildup after a good soak in alcohol. However, you may have to repeat the process a few times to get rid of all the grime.

6. Rinse and Dry

After the full cleaning, wash your bong and all its pieces with warm soapy water and rinse them well. You don’t want any lingering alcohol or other cleaning solutions used while cleaning lingering in your pipe.

How to Clean a Glass Weed Pipe

A standard glass spoon, one-hitter, or chillum tube is a lot smaller and involves fewer parts. Therefore, they can be a lot simpler to keep clean, and a quick after-use cleanup is ideal. You can use the same process for cleaning all glass pieces; isopropyl alcohol, salt, and pipe cleaners will all be good tools to use. However, something like Ooze Resolution Glass Cleaning Wipes can also work well for general cleaning.

The beauty of these smaller pieces is you can also simply prepare a bowl of alcohol and allow the piece to soak for a bit to break down any sticky bits before scrubbing and rinsing. The tough part is, these pieces can also have some small crevices that are a little harder to scrub. Therefore, more frequent cleaning is for the best.
