THC: Delta 8, 9 & 10 [Differences, Availability & More]

Jump To:

With the 2018 Farm Bill bringing federal legalization of hemp products, an entirely new category of psychoactive cannabinoids has become available in almost every state across the country. But, what are these cannabinoids, and what are the differences between them? We have the answers.

Delta 8 THC

Delta 8 THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid produced from hemp. This compound can be found naturally in cannabis plants at nearly undetectable levels, however, scientists found a way to convert CBD to Delta 8. Delta 8 is considered a highly stable molecule, which means that products made with it have a longer shelf-life than those made with Delta 9. However, it’s important to note there have been concerns among scientists about the new, man-made cannabinoid. Delta 8 THC can be found in forms that include edibles, vapes, capsules, and even infused hemp flowers.

Delta 9 THC

Delta 9 THC is the main psychoactive chemical found in cannabis plants. Delta 9 THC is the cannabinoid that’s made the cannabis plant famous, producing the “high” felt after consumption. It is also the most abundant cannabinoid naturally produced by the plant. Aside from typical cannabis flower, Delta 9 THC can be found in many products, including vapes, edibles, topicals, capsules, oils, and more.

Delta 10 THC

Like Delta 8, Delta 10 THC is derived from legal hemp. As such, it can be legally sold in states that do not have legal recreational cannabis yet. Delta 10 is more difficult to extract from hemp, so products made with it remain rare. It is derived from either crude CBD or from CBD isolate. It can also be extracted using cryo-ethanol extraction or hydrocarbon extraction.

Many people say that Delta 10 brings on a high that is more like what you experience from sativa strains.

Biggest Differences? Research, Credibility & Strength

Of the three, Delta 9 THC provides the most intense psychoactive high. It is the most well-researched and is naturally occurring in all cannabis plants. It is the clear winner for the majority of cannabis users, however other forms of THC can prove to be valuable for many. When trying any THC product for the first time, go easy. Start with a low dose, as everyone’s body metabolizes cannabinoids differently. Also, make sure that you will not need to drive or operate heavy equipment, as these are all psychoactive compounds.

Drug Tests

All of them. Because of their molecular resemblance to Delta 9 THC, both Delta 8 and Delta 10 are likely to cause positive drug tests.

As when enjoying any cannabis or hemp product, use your own good judgment. Try out different formulations to see what you like. Take your time to explore and to get to know your body and the effects you want.
