Winning Back Sleep with Weed

If Olympic medals were given out for sleeping, I would have had the gold as a young person. I was the best sleeper, an amazing sleeper, no one had ever met a better sleeper than me. Until I had a kid. Then it all went to shit.

Even once my daughter started sleeping through the night, I still found myself waking frequently and staying awake as my brain decided 2:30 am was a great time to fire up. I watched myself go from Superior Slumberer to the hypervigilant parent who will, “never sleep soundly again,” as all those who came before me warned would happen.

Suddenly sucking at sleeping might have been easier if I was never good at it to begin with, but to know how great it could be just left me feeling frustrated and even a little hopeless. You’ll never guess what helped.

It is generally well-known that particular strains and doses of cannabis can promote restful sleep, and according to some sources, up to 70% of young adult cannabis users have picked it up for the purpose of improving their sleep. The truth is, we live in a pretty sleep-deprived society, and I don’t know about you, but I am certainly not my best self when I miss out on my precious z’s. My mental and physical health plummets, and any real chance of productivity goes right out the window. It isn’t surprising that people are seeking more natural, wellness-driven solutions to their problems!

My journey using cannabis to help me sleep required some trial and error and a lot of self-awareness. There are so many helpful resources out there (including our very own guide!) to assist you with finding a starting point in terms of dosage, prominent cannabinoids, and method of consumption. I, for instance, find that smoking flower right before bed causes my heart rate to increase which doesn’t lend itself well to relaxing right away. If I’m trying to fall asleep ASAP, a tincture or fast-acting edible with a higher ratio of CBD to THC does the trick. Some products also include melatonin, which really ups the sleep impact for me.

As with trying any new cannabis product, there is so much value in tracking its effects so you can become attuned to the unique impact it has on you, as well as the optimal timing and dosage in order to have the best experience for whatever your desired outcome may be. This not only helps you discover the perfect product to promote some shut-eye, but also what you may want to avoid as bedtime draws near.

Finding my way back to sleepy success was not as simple as only using cannabis to finally reach Dreamland. It is so important to become mindful of your evening habits in order to have good sleep hygiene. I got really intentional about my wind down routine and figured out how much sleep I personally require to have a great next day.

It’s also important to note that I don’t use cannabis every single night to help me sleep, and this is purposeful. I personally do not want to be dependent on anything to be able to sleep. I use cannabis as a course-corrector when I have gone off the rails with my cute sleep routine, or when I am entering a situation that I know will make falling asleep on my own difficult. Knowing that I can incorporate cannabis into my sleep wellness routine relieves so much anxiety I have historically experienced when it comes to breaking the sleepless cycle.

I hope you can feel as empowered as I did taking back your sleep and using our favorite plant to support your efforts. I wish you good fortune in the sleeps to come. Sweet dreams!

This post was written with a cup of Organic India’s Tulsi Sleep tea and Betty’s Eddies Bedtime Betty’s Lemon Agave Chews. Also known as Holy Basil, tulsi is an antioxidant-rich, adaptogenic herb that works with ashwagandha and chamomile to promote relaxation. Betty’s Eddies Bedtime Chews combine 5mg THC with 2mg melatonin, making it my not-so-secret weapon for falling asleep when I’ve been having some trouble.  Ironically, my first shot at writing this was the morning after Daylight Savings, a cruel time for parents of young children, and your girl could not formulate a cohesive sentence. Suffice it to say, Bedtime Betty’s saved me and my brain is now back intact.
