5 Outdoor and Riverfront Activities

Though Stillwater is famous for its antique malls and cultural activities, in the summer, everyone wants to be outdoors. The restaurant and bar patios are almost always full, but if you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous, try one of these activities:

  1. Brown’s Creek State Trail starts just north of downtown Stillwater at the Laurel Street trailhead and takes you into the countryside. It only takes about six miles for a complete change of scenery.
  2. Gondola Romantica is a great alternative to this popular Italian experience. You and your special someone can cruise the St. Croix in an authentic Venetian gondola.
  3. Recreational Boating on the St. Croix offers everything from kayaking to paddleboarding and more.
  4. Gateway State Trail is an 18-mile trail created by paving a Soo Line rail bed. The trail begins in St. Paul and ends in Pine Point County Park. This scenic and mostly flat trail is perfect for biking.
  5. The Washington County Fair is one of the popular summer events near Stillwater and has something to make just about everybody happy. Mark your calendars for July 29th through August 2nd, 2026. That’s a full week of thrilling rides, delicious food, and all kinds of family-friendly fun.

Where to Eat and Relax Downtown

Even the most discerning foodie will not have a problem finding the perfect eatery in Stillwater. Here are a few that pair well with the glorious summer weather:

  1. Papa’s Rooftop is on the rooftop of the Water Street Inn. In addition to delicious food and a professionally curated wine list, you’ll enjoy the 360-degree spectacular views of Downtown Stillwater and the St. Croix River.
  2. Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter is so authentic that if someone blindfolded you and took you to this place for German food and beer, you would think you had been transported to Bavaria. It’s 10 minutes and a world away from Downtown Stillwater. Enjoy the picturesque setting, and don’t forget to say hello to the goats.
  3. MN Nice Cream prides itself more on a nostalgic soft-serve experience than the big guys. They have unique toppings, and they offer dairy-free and vegan options.

Stillwater has a licensed cannabis dispensary to help its residents enjoy summer even more. Though recreational marijuana is legal in Minnesota for adults 21 and over, you must consume it at a private residence before taking off, or save it to wind down after you get home.
