There are two schools of thought when it comes to winter weekends. Some people haul gear across three states and lock themselves into resort stays. Others prefer a comfortable home base and let everything else unfold as day trips.
Southern Maine is built for the latter: mountains close enough for morning runs, a coast that’s never too far, and the freedom to follow your mood without the pressure of maximizing an overpriced lift ticket. You go where the day takes you, and you come back to somewhere familiar.

Ski Mountains Worth the Drive
From Southern Maine, you’re within striking distance of several great ski options. Some offer quick half-day runs, and others provide full adventures that justify an early start.
The half-day options are great for a physical reset of cold air without the exhaustion of marathon sessions, while full days are great when the conditions are too good to pass up or when you want to squeeze every run out of the ticket price.
Shawnee Peak
Shawnee Peak, now known as Pleasant Mountain, is about an hour away from Portland by car in nearby Bridgton. The mountain offers a gentle vertical drop that won’t intimidate anyone, making it perfect for families, beginners, or anyone who wants a lazy day on the slopes. There is night skiing available, which allows you to extend your day if you’d rather sleep in and hit the slopes later.
Cranmore Mountain Resort
Just a little into New Hampshire, roughly 90 minutes from southern Maine, you’ll find Cranmore Mountain Resort in North Conway. This is another family-friendly mountain, though it has enough variety to keep intermediate skiers engaged as well. North Conway is also a treat in itself, with shopping, restaurants, and a classic New England ski-town vibe.
Sugarloaf
If you’re looking for something a little more challenging, Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley will satisfy that need perfectly. The drive is a little longer, clocking in at around two and a half hours, but the snowpack and terrain justify that distance for experienced skiers. Get an early start, though, as this isn’t a casual afternoon trip. The mountain rewards early starts and full commitment.

Not a Ski Day? Winter Activities That Still Feel Like a Getaway
Of course, not all winter days involve ski lifts. Here are some other great activities in the area:
Snowshoeing and Winter Hikes
These offer the same cold-air clarity of a ski resort without the crowds or expense. Bradbury Mountain State Park, rated #1 for mountain biking, is open year-round, providing manageable trails with rewarding views. Or, for something more ambitious, Mount Agamenticus gives you coastal forest panoramas without serious elevation gain.
Scenic Drives
A nice, relaxing drive down Route 302 becomes an adventure in itself when the landscape is buried in snow. Route 1A along the New Hampshire coast is always a wonderful option. Both routes will give you the quiet beauty of winter light on frozen fields and the gray ocean. You don’t need a destination in mind, just drive and enjoy the experience.
Cozy Food Stops
For an evening quick outing, Portland, Maine, has no shortage of attractions, dining, and shopping. Cozy spots to come in out of the cold and eat something warm while you watch the snow fall make for a nice, relaxing trip when you have no pressing place to be. To really get into the mood, try to find the spots with wood stoves and soup specials.
Build a “Two-Speed” Weekend: Adventure & Recovery
The best winter weekends aren’t all at one pace. Alternating between exertion and rest gives you the best of both worlds without burning you out on either.
Mornings are for moving. Getting outside before noon and engaging in a fun activity will get your blood flowing and prepare you for your day. This could be skiing, snowshoeing, or just a long walk down a snow-covered trail. Cold air first thing in the morning sharpens everything. For those who indulge, a puff or two of a good sativa pre-roll will give you the energy to power through the cold on less adventurous days.
Afternoons are for warmth. Return to your base camp, take off all those wet layers of clothing, and let the day slow down. At times like this, a hot shower feels like a luxury, the coffee tastes just a little better, and you fully appreciate the warmth of the indoors. It’s the perfect time to enjoy an indica edible and relax for the rest of the night.
