The History of 4/20
To fully appreciate 4/20, we want to first look at the holiday’s roots. The origins of 420 can be traced back to the 1970s in California. A group of teenagers who were avid fans of cannabis had nicknamed themselves the “Waldos.” Living in San Rafael, the teens had heard a rumor that somewhere in the area was an abandoned weed crop. The crop was reportedly left behind by a member of the Coast Guard who had gotten shipped out. The teens would meet at 4:20 after school to search for the crop.
Although there’s no confirmation that the weed crop was ever found, the “420” code stuck. The teens started to use “420” as a secret way to make plans to smoke weed. The term began to enter mainstream culture when one of the Waldos joined the Grateful Dead as a roadie. The Waldo declared that 4:20 was an acceptable time of day to start enjoying pot.
Over the last several decades, 4/20 has become a way to promote cannabis legalization efforts. Advocates have used 4/20 celebrations to push for widespread acceptance and legalization. There has been a marked effort to promote the benefits of weed and the dangers of prohibition.
