THC tinctures are a highly effective way to get all the benefits of the cannabis plant without all the smell and hassle of smoking it. A THC tincture is a liquid extract of the cannabis plant, providing a concentrated dose of the psychoactive THC compound. When it comes to making THC tinctures on your own, it’s easier than you may think.

There are several types of THC tinctures, and a few ways to consume them. You can use tinctures in an e-cigarettes, also known as a vape pens, or you can place a few drops of sublingual tincture under your tongue. Each delivers a potent dose of THC.

How to Make Different Types of THC Tinctures

Making any type of THC tincture involves three basic steps. The same steps are required to create THC tincture for use in vape pens or for use as a sublingual tincture.

  1. Activate the THC,
  2. Extract THC in a solution (alcohol or glycerin),
  3. Strain plant material from the tincture.

1. How to activate THC

Heat activates THC, which is why many people smoke cannabis. You can also activate the THC through a process known as decarboxylation. Simply pre-heat your oven to 260 degrees Fahrenheit and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, spread the cannabis evenly across the cookie sheet, and bake for about 45 minutes. Be sure to turn the cannabis frequently and watch closely to avoid burning.

Note: If you use a cannabis vaporizer, simply use the dried product that remains in the oven after your pack is finished. This activated material is called “already vaped bud” (or AVB), and is edible.

2. How to extract THC to make tincture

Once the cannabis has been decarboxylated, mix it with ethyl alcohol meant for human consumption or glycerin, also known as glycerol. Put the decarboxylated cannabis in a mason jar and add enough alcohol or glycerin to cover the plant matter completely; tighten the lid. Shake the jar vigorously to mix the cannabis and the alcohol/glycerin thoroughly. Put the jar in a cool, dark place and leave for up to 3 weeks; shake the jar every day and add liquid if necessary to keep the plant material wet. You can use the tincture right away, but it will be stronger if you let it sit.

3. How to strain plant substances from your tincture

After your tincture has been sitting long enough for the solution to extract THC from the cannabis contents, strain the mixture through a coffee filter or cheesecloth before use. Remember: straining efficiently will make your tincture more potent; so the more filtrations, the better. Once you’ve fully drained your tincture, discard the leaf and store the tincture in a small, airtight container.

How to make a THC tincture for e-cig

To make THC tincture for e-cigarettes, perform the above steps using alcohol and a sterile jar. After allowing the plants to infuse into the tincture liquid for 12 to 24 days, strain the liquid into a new sterile jar. Add three parts vegetable glycerin to the new jar and shake for 2 full minutes to combine the mixture. Your vape juice is now ready to use.

How to make a THC glycerin tincture

Use the same steps for making a THC glycerin tincture as you would for alcohol.

How long does it take to make THC tincture?

Each step of the THC tincture process takes only a few minutes, but the decarboxylation and soaking processes can take some time. From the beginning to the end of the process THC extraction process, you can expect to wait a month to 6 weeks in between batches.
